Deliverance for the Lord’s anointed
God’s power is at work to deliver His anointed! This is abundantly clear in the book of Isaiah where we read God’s promise of deliverance to the returning remnant of Israel. ‘Therefore thus says the Lord God of hosts, "O My people who dwell in Zion, do not fear the Assyrian who strikes you with the rod and lifts up his staff against you, the way Egypt did … The Lord of hosts will arouse a scourge against him like the slaughter of Midian at the rock of Oreb; and His staff will be over the sea and He will lift it up the way He did in Egypt. So it will be in that day, that his burden will be removed from his shoulders and his yoke from your neck because of the anointing.’ Isa 10:24-27. ...Read More

The shield of Saul, not anointed with oil
I have been really disturbed by a statement concerning the death of King Saul in the Old Testament. As David lamented Saul’s death, he grieved that the king’s shield was not anointed. He said, ‘O mountains of Gilboa, let not dew or rain be on you, nor fields of offerings; for there the shield of the mighty was defiled, the shield of Saul, not anointed with oil’. 2Sa 1:21. What happened in Saul’s life that made him so vulnerable to an assisted suicide? How did this regression occur in one who had been anointed with the fullness of the Spirit of God? 1Sa 10:1, 9-10. Why was he left exposed and unprotected because his shield was no longer anointed? ...Read More

Are you watching?
I would like to pose the question, ‘Are you watching?’ You may well ask, ‘Watching for what?’ Of course, there is no definitive answer because we must make our own judgements – where we work, who we mix with, what we do, and so on. No one can be our regulator and there are no set guidelines. I will, however, outline some general statements from the Scripture, as it is absolutely essential that we do watch and that we know what we are watching for. Otherwise, we can expose ourselves and those in our care to harm. We could even cause them, as living stones, to be pulled out of His house. 1Pe 2:5. ...Read More

Built together as living stones
It’s an amazing thought that God has chosen us to be His dwelling place. 2Co 6:16. Eph 2:19-22. However, we are not part of the house or household of God just because we name the name of Jesus. Heb 3:6. 1Pe 4:17. We are only part of the household of God when we are being ‘built together as living stones’ upon the foundation of the fivefold ministry, with Jesus Christ as our cornerstone. Eph 2:20. Eph 4:11-12. Isa 28:16. ...Read More
Evangelism by Relational Offering

Jesus was called 'a glutton’ and ‘a drunkard’ because He came ‘eating and drinking’ during His ministry on earth. He was also accused of being ‘the friend of tax collectors and sinners’. Luk 7:33-34. Was He using food and drink to establish a fellowship with those He ministered to? The Scripture doesn’t contradict itself. So when it says He was the friend of sinners, He was clearly more than just an acquaintance! In the book of Proverbs, we read that ‘a friend loves at all times’. Pro 17:17. It also says, ‘Faithful are the wounds of a friend’. Pro 27:6. Because love always motivated Jesus in His dealings with His friends, we can assume that some harsh words were spoken. We are no one’s friend, if we only ever tell them what we think they want to hear or if they only ever tell us what we want to hear. There is no relational honesty or relational offering in that.

I love the description in the book of Acts of the one hundred and twenty disciples who were gathered in the upstairs room on the Day of Pentecost. It says they were ‘continually’ devoted. Act 1:14. There are many references to the word ‘continual’ in the Bible. In the Old Testament, it refers to the continual burnt offering which was placed morning and evening upon the altar at the door of the tabernacle. Exo 29:38-42. This offering is clearly still relevant today because the apostle Paul tells us to present our bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God. He calls it our ‘spiritual service of worship’. Rom 12:1. ...Read More

John’s vision of the lampstands
There is a remarkable vision recorded in the first chapter of the book of Revelation. When John, the apostle, hears a loud voice like a trumpet behind him, he turns to see Jesus Christ walking among seven golden lampstands with seven stars in His right hand. Rev 1:10-20. In the vision, Jesus tells John that the seven lampstands are the seven churches and the seven stars are the messengers of those churches. ...Read More

When we hear the word ‘confession’, we may only think of it in relation to sin. But as we search the Scriptures, we find that this is just one facet of this important subject.
Jesus confesses our name before the Father
Firstly, we find that Christ confesses our name before the Father. Rev 3:5. When He came up as the Firstfruits from the dead, every name that was ever written in the book of life came up with Him, and was remembered and proclaimed. ...Read More

The scriptural principle of ‘firstfruits’ is one that has been dear to my heart for a very long time, because it explains how the life of God is multiplied. When God made certain promises to Abraham, Isaac became the firstfruits of that covenant. But what exactly does it mean to be a firstfruits? ...Read More

When we see the term ‘fire’ in the Scripture, it does not always refer to the blaze that results when someone drops a match in the bush. That is not the fire of God. We are told that those who are unregenerate and unredeemed will endure the lake of fire for all eternity, but I do not think that this is a place that is set alight with a flaming torch. ...Read More
